Many children in Fiji continue to experience neglect, abuse, abandonment and family breakdown, with Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran saying the Ministry recorded 16,770 cases of child abuse between 2012 and 2025.
She says 5,329 of these were cases of child neglect.
While launching the Phos Haven Care Home in Meigunyah, Nadi, Kiran acknowledged the trustees, management, caregivers, volunteers, donors and supporters for providing vulnerable children with safety, love and a sense of belonging.
She says this is what makes Phos Haven very special, as it is committed to providing specialised care and a loving sanctuary for abandoned children, including children with disabilities.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of proper planning for children and young people leaving residential care, particularly girls and young people with disabilities who may require ongoing assistance.
She says each child should have a safe and practical exit plan that connects them to education, vocational training, employment, suitable accommodation and continued guidance.
Kiran says every child in Fiji has the right to grow up safe, respected and supported to reach their full potential.
The Minister emphasised that protecting children is a shared responsibility, with Government, residential care homes, charitable trusts, faith-based organisations, businesses, communities and families needing to work together to ensure no child is left behind.
She also highlighted the Child Care and Protection Act 2024 and the Child Justice Act 2024, which will strengthen Fiji’s child protection system through prevention, early intervention, family support and improved coordination among responsible agencies and organisations.
Kiran acknowledged those who support Phos Haven through financial contributions, food, clothing, household supplies, professional services and other assistance.
She says their contributions demonstrate the Fijian value of solesolevaki — working together for the common good.
Phos Haven is a charitable trust established to provide a safe and caring environment for disadvantaged children, children with disabilities and young people who do not have adequate family or social support.
The Home currently cares for 12 children and young people, including five children with disabilities and four young adults over the age of 18 who continue to require long-term care and support.
The opening was attended by the Home’s trustees, management and caregivers, as well as business owners, representatives of faith-based organisations and members of the public who support Phos Haven through cash donations and assistance in kind.
