A family in Vanua Levu woke up this morning to devastating news after learning that their family home in Delaivuna, Taveuni, was destroyed by fire around 1am.
Siperi Marama, the wife of a Church Steward in Druadrua, Vanua Levu, was overcome with emotion, as the entire family had spent Christmas together in Labasa.
She says the four-bedroom house in Taveuni relied solely on solar power for electricity and was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
This has led the family to suspect that the fire may have been deliberately set.
Marama is calling on the Fiji Police Force and the National Fire Authority to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
She says the family had recently purchased a new washing machine, which had not yet been used, and that all household appliances were destroyed in the blaze.
According to Marama, the estimated damage caused by the fire is around $300,000.
She is appealing to Police, neighbours, or anyone with information related to the fire at her family’s home to come forward and provide details to the authorities.
We have sent questions to the National Fire Authority and the Police regarding the incident. They are yet to respond.
