Crusaders captain David Havili is leaving New Zealand rugby for Japan.

Havili played 30 Tests for New Zealand but has not featured for the national side since November 2024.

He has spent more than a decade with the Crusaders, making more than 150 appearances for the club.

The 31-year-old made his All Blacks debut against the Argentina in October 2017 in Buenos Aires and scored on debut.

Havili says he is grateful for his time with the Crusaders and the All Blacks and feels it is the right time to move on, with the next generation coming through.

He says the legacy is in great hands and that he is content with his decision.

Havili joined the Crusaders in post-earthquake Christchurch, playing at Apollo Projects Stadium, and eventually became captain, leading the side in its first game at its new home, Te Kaha Stadium.

He believes the Crusaders are well placed to challenge for the Super Rugby Pacific title next year.
