The US Capitol is once again secured but a woman is dead after supporters of President Donald Trump breached one of the most iconic American buildings, engulfing the nation's capital in chaos.

CNN reports a woman is dead after being shot in the chest on the Capitol grounds.

Multiple officers have been injured with at least one transported to the hospital.

Photos posted by CNN showed there was an armed standoff at the House front door, and police officers had their guns drawn at someone who is trying to reach the front door.

Those protesters eventually breached the door.

There are photos of people sitting on the chair of the Speaker of the House.

CNN reports at least two suspected pipe bombs have been rendered safe by law enforcement — one at a building that houses Republican National Committee offices and one in the US Capitol complex.

Protesters have continued to swarm the Capitol, some posing for photos in the Capitol rotunda.

Chants of "We Want Trump" echo through the hallways as press and lawmakers are taken to an undisclosed location for safety.

CNN reports House and Senate leadership are safe and in an undisclosed.

BBC News reports sirens are wailing outside Capitol Hill, and Police are swarming everywhere – camouflaged tactical officers are the latest to arrive.

Trump protesters are on the steps of the Capitol Hill rotunda, and some are on the balcony, waving flags and shouting "USA" and chanting "stop the steal".

The Mayor of Washington DC is now ordering a curfew there.

The US vice president Mike Pence has been evacuated.

Pence had said he will not block the certification of Biden as president-elect, despite demands from Trump.

Trump has since tweeted that “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution”

US President Donald Trump has addressed rioters in a video message where he told them "to go home" while simultaneously falsely stating that the election was "stolen."
