Minister for Education Premila Kumar

Minister for Education Premila Kumar has told teachers that they will become redundant if they do not change with time.

She made these comments while speaking to the teachers of Rampur College and Rampur Primary School during her visit today.

She says unfortunately the Fijian Teachers Association has requested that for the last time the Ministry can consider having hand written tests for those teachers who are not computer literate.

The Minister says they have allowed this but from 2022 there will be no such thing as hand written test and everything will be computer based.

She says they have seen that when the heads of schools are not digital savvy, then it becomes a problem because they cannot see the importance of digital tools.

Kumar says they want to come to a stage where even the students do their exams online and the teachers will do online marking.

The Minister reminded teachers that they will miss out if they do not keep up.

Kumar has also urged teachers to keep moving with time and do not make themselves irrelevant in today's age because our children are too advanced.

She say they are doing this because children are now born with technology.

Kumar also says she knows that the school curriculum needs a change and the Ministry is working to bring innovation in teaching and learning.

She adds one way of doing this is through digital platforms and they will be recruiting some experts in the area of e-learning.

The Minister says there will be a lot of shift in the way they deliver their curriculum and the teaching and learning process.

She says her advice for all the teachers is that they should be fit for purpose.
