Over a tonne of rubbish was collected along the shoreline from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services to the Helipad next to the Suva Bowling Club during the clean up campaign hosted by the Pacific Oceans Litter Youth Project for World Oceans Day.

Pacific Oceans Litter Youth Project Co-founder, Suzanne Turaganiwai says they mostly found food takeaway packs along the Suva foreshore.

Turaganiwai says people mostly visit this area with their family to eat and most of them leave their rubbish behind.

She says most of the rubbish that is coming in from the sea is mainly household waste and where they collected 1,421kg of waste.

Turaganiwai thanked the staff of the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry, United Nations Development Programme, and International School Suva for joining them in cleaning the Suva foreshore.

She says this clean-up is part of the one-week celebration for World Oceans Day.

The theme for World Oceans Day is Changing the Tides.
