Labasa residents frustrated over recurring power outages on Sundays

Labasa Town Council Chair Paul Jaduram

Residents in Labasa are voicing growing concerns over frequent power outages, which have become a regular occurrence — especially on Sundays.

Labasa Town Council Chair Paul Jaduram raised the issue during the Fijian Media Association Meet the Public and the Press session in Labasa, questioning the high number of breakdowns and expressing frustration over what he described as repeated and prolonged power outages.

In response, a representative from Energy Fiji Limited explained that most Sunday outages are due to planned maintenance work.

He says the media and public are informed about these shutdowns in advance.

However, Jaduram challenged this explanation, saying many of the outages are unplanned and occur without warning.

The EFL representative admitted that while planned shutdowns are advertised, technical faults can still occur.

He says sometimes the shutdown is not planned — it just happens — and they have to fix it as soon as possible.

Jaduram responded by saying that he is an electrical engineer himself, insisting that the recurring unplanned outages point to a deeper underlying issue.

We have sent questions to EFL regarding this issue.
