The Kava market has the potential to become a billion-dollar industry in Fiji if managed well, as the United Kingdom and China are also looking at lifting the kava ban.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, SME's and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica highlighted this while speaking to the people of Niudua Village in Kadavu.

Kamikamica says importing kava to markets such as the UK and China can be a significant opportunity for the people of Kadavu as they are very familiar with the product.

He says discussions are ongoing on the initiatives on how the government can assist in developing and widening the Fijian economy in which Kadavu can play a great part.

Kamikamica says they are committed to empowering rural communities by not only being self-reliant but also by creating economic opportunities and activities that will result in sustainable economic opportunities.

The Minister for Trade further says the government is also encouraging men, women and youths to take a risk and start a business because, through hardwork and determination, they will be able to provide for their families.

He adds it is important that they deliver opportunities to every rural community and its people for income generation.
