Churches and other faith based groups urged to control sound levels in residential areas – Nalumisa

Things are going out of hand in some areas

Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa

Churches and faith based groups are being advised to limit the use of loud sound systems in residential areas during services, following a warning from the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.

While speaking to fijivillage News today, Nalumisa called on Fijians to be responsible and considerate of their neighbours.

The Minister issued this statement after residents of Khalsa Road and parts of Samabula raised concerns and contacted fijivillage News about noise disturbances every Sunday with loudspeakers blaring away in the mornings and afternoons.

This is from a church service recorded in the Khalsa Road neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon.

Nalumisa says faith-based organisations conducting evangelical activities should keep their noise at a minimum level, emphasising the importance of respecting both the attendees and the surrounding communities.

He adds that whether Christian or other faith-based groups, it’s essential for everyone to be mindful of the impact of their activities on others living in the residential areas.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, ACP Livai Driu, noted that the laws exist to manage disturbances and maintain peace within urban areas. ACP Driu says if issues arise outside a municipality’s jurisdiction or involve widespread disturbance, the police can act under Section 376 of the Crimes Act, which addresses Common Nuisances. ACP Driu urged the public to report such complaints promptly to the appropriate authorities.
