67 children attempted suicide or committed self-harm between 2022 and July 2024, with majority between the ages of 13 and 17 years old, according to the National Child Welfare Act database.

The Ministry for Women, Children and Social Protection says out of the 67 children, 79 percent were young girls.

They say 1,276 suicide and attempted suicide cases were recorded by the Fiji Police Force from 2016 to 2021, with nearly half the cases resulting in death.

They further say say an average of 213 cases per year were recorded from 2016 to 2021.

The Ministry adds 2019 saw the highest number of cases, with 244 cases recorded, with the Western division consistently reporting the most cases throughout this period.

The Ministry says as we reflect on these numbers, we must recognize that behind each statistic is a life, a family, and a community affected by the tragedy of suicide.

They are urging everyone to "Start the Conversation" about mental health, to foster an environment where individuals feel safe to share their struggles and seek help.

They also say as indicated by this year’s theme of observance, we must raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides.

The Ministry says changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support.

They add that together, we can change the narrative surrounding mental health and suicide prevention, promoting understanding, compassion, and support for those in need.

The Ministry says the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that suicide is a major public health challenge, with approximately 800,000 deaths every year, equating to one person every 40 seconds.

They say this staggering statistic highlights the urgent need for collective action and support.

The Ministry urges all Fijians to stand united in our commitment to prevent suicide and support one another in our journey towards healing and hope.
