5G network launch delayed until June due to USAID project adjustments

Fiji’s much awaited 5G network, initially set for a March launch, has been delayed until June this year due to setbacks linked to USAID projects.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications Manoa Kamikamica says while the original target was March, adjustments had to be made to accommodate these delays.

He says despite the delay, the launch will take place this year.

He adds that the government had approved 5G experimentation as soon as they took office and the network has been undergoing testing in various parts of Fiji.

Kamikamica says they are working on finalising policy settings.

When asked by fijivillage News whether 5G would affect internet costs, Kamikamica says he is unaware of any expected changes in pricing.

He says the focus should be on the improvement in internet speed, which will benefit researchers and those who rely on the internet heavily.

He says 5G technology would boost key sectors like agriculture, education and healthcare.

The Deputy Prime Minister says telemedicine would greatly benefit, allowing for remote diagnosis instead of requiring travel to Suva.

He says with Starlink already available in the country, 5G access would open up more opportunities.

He says overall, he believes that the introduction of 5G will be a positive step forward for Fiji.
