The next General Election could be held under a new Constitution, with Acting Attorney General Siromi Turaga saying it is possible if the constitutional review process is completed in time.
Speaking to the media, Turaga says his office is fully focused on the constitutional review, with resources dedicated to compiling and summarising public submissions before they are presented to the Constitutional Review Commission.
He says the drafters and constitutional consultant Professor Anthony Regan are currently in Fiji working on the process, and he is confident the target of submitting the Commission's report to the President by 31st August can be met.
When asked whether the next election could be held under a new Constitution, Turaga replied that it is possible.
However, he says he does not want to make any predictions, stressing that the Constitutional Review Commission is independent and that the Government must wait for its recommendations and draft before it is presented to Parliament.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has previously said the next general election will proceed whether or not Fiji has a new Constitution.
