Suva Magistrate Yogesh Prasad has summoned the Officer-in-Charge of the Suva Remand Centre following allegations that some remandees have been forced to eat pork or beef, which is against their religious beliefs.
This comes after a remandee appeared in court today and alleged that he had been forced to eat beef or pork for dinner over the past three to four nights and was assaulted if he refused.
He further alleged that this had been happening for some time.
The remandee told the court that after raising the issue, they were given fish for breakfast but only bread for their other meals.
Magistrate Prasad also questioned another remandee from Suva, who made similar allegations.
His lawyer, Abhay Singh, told fijivillage News that his client had also been threatened for refusing to eat the meals.
The Corrections Officer-in-Charge will appear in court on Monday.
Meanwhile, Fiji Corrections Service has confirmed to fijivillage News that they are investigating the allegations.
