Skin specialists push for more space as demand grows

The Head of Dermatology at Tamavua Twomey Hospital says one of the biggest challenges facing the department is a lack of space as demand for services continues to grow.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Principal Medical Officer Dermatology Dr Luciane Savo says the department is now training new dermatologists through its programme with Fiji National University, and is looking at expanding its clinic space at Tamavua Twomey Hospital.

Dr Savo says they are also working to expand dermatology services to the Western and Northern Divisions so patients can access specialist care closer to home.

She says another challenge is ensuring dermatology is given greater priority within the health sector.

When asked about the department's priorities, Dr Savo says they would like to see more positions created to support services in the Central, Western and Northern Divisions.

She also highlighted the need for improved clinic facilities to enhance patient care and service delivery.

Dr Savo says the department is pushing for improvements to laboratory services, including the development of a fungal laboratory, which would help improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
