New 140-stall Nakasi Market opens

New 140-stall Nakasi Market opens

Great news for people staying around Nakasi, Koronivia and Davuilevu Housing as the long-awaited Nakasi Market which consists of 140 stalls is now open and it is more than a new building.

Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa says it is a symbol of opportunity, dignity and empowerment for the hundred vendors who will call this space their own.

The Minister says this is a place where people earn their livelihood and the farmers who come all the way from Rewa and around the town will sell their produce, take something home, as well as be a source of income for people whose lives depend on this type of facility.

He says Nakasi Market stands as a statement of the Coalition Government’s commitment to the National Development Plan, which is centred on empowering the people of Fiji through unity.

Market vendor, Noor Din Shah from Wainibuku says he used to sell vegetables on the roadside in front of another supermarket but faced a lot of struggles during rainy seasons.

He says he is happy that the market is now open as people will not have to stand in hot or rainy conditions.

Shah says he used to buy from a wholesaler before but was not able to make much profit.

The market vendor says he started to plant his own vegetables such as cabbage, eggplant, bean, okra, maize and cucumber.

He says he is able to feed his family by selling his produce and is also teaching his children to help him on the farm.
