Fiji prepares for an ageing population with new National Ageing Policy
Ministry of Women
Fiji is preparing for a future in which its people are living longer, with the Government progressing the National Ageing Policy 2026–2035 to ensure that longer lives are supported by stronger health and social protection systems, age-friendly communities and greater opportunities.

The policy, being progressed through the Ministry for Women, Children and Social Protection and the National Council for Older Persons, has been shaped by the voices of Fijians.

The Ministry says a total of 2,568 participants across 13 provinces and 37 districts took part in consultations, including older persons, families, communities, civil society organisations, service providers and Government agencies.

They say the Government is now moving towards the development of an Implementation Plan to translate these policy commitments into practical action, with the National Ageing Policy expected to be brought before Cabinet for consideration in October.

The Ministry says Fiji is also participating in the Fifth Review and Appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA), providing an opportunity to assess progress, identify gaps and strengthen the national response to population ageing.

These efforts come as Fiji joins the global community today in marking the International Day of Older Persons, commemorated annually on 1 October.

Our people are living longer, and this is an achievement we should celebrate.
Our older persons are not simply recipients of care and assistance.
They are parents and grandparents, workers, entrepreneurs, caregivers, community and faith leaders, volunteers, mentors and custodians of our knowledge, culture, traditions and history. Their experience and contributions are national assets.

The Ministry says older persons must continue to have opportunities to participate, contribute and be heard for as long as they wish and are able.
