Two derelict vessels have been successfully removed from Suva Harbour by Blue Prosperity.
One vessel was safely sunk at a designated location, while the other was towed offshore and safely disposed of.
Blue Prosperity says both operations followed strict cleaning, inspection, and environmental procedures to ensure that the removal activities did not cause harm to the marine environment.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says for too long, derelict vessels have presented risks to the safety, environment and economic productivity of our harbour.
Rabuka says cleaning up Suva Harbour is part of Fiji’s commitment to sustainably managing 100 percent and fully protecting 30 percent of the ocean.
He says the Captain Johnathan Smith Fund is supporting the safe removal of derelict vessels from the harbour, and is proof of what's possible when Government, the private sector, partners, and communities work together.
Rabuka says this cleanup effort demonstrates the kind of multi-agency coordination that effective Marine Spatial Planning and sustainable ocean management requires.
