With school students currently on holiday, parents have been burdened with the worry of having to keep their children disengaged from trouble and keep them safe this festive period.

The answer to the plight of such parents comes in the form of swimming lessons which are being offered by 7 time Olympian and swimmer Caroline Puamau who offers swimming lessons for children and adults of all ages.

Speaking to Fijivillage, the Coordinator for the “Let’s Swim Fiji” initiative, Trisa Dunn says swimming is a life lesson that can save your life and the lives of others as well.

Dunn says these lessons are on offer during all school breaks which includes the two-week term end breaks.

In the last month, there were 5 recorded cases of drowning.

A total of 33 Fijian lives have been lost to drowning so far this year, and nine of the victims were below the age of 10 years.

She says they use their discretion with the payment for classes, and the lessons cost $10 per session.

Dunn says this is subject to their decision as the organisation’s main focus is to reach out to people of all levels regardless of what their household income is. She says people can come forward and talk to them if they wish to get their children into the lessons as negotiations can be done.

The children during these lessons are also taught about water safety and how to save people when they are drowning.

Parents that are interested in getting their children enrolled can contact Dunn via their Facebook page, “Let’s Swim Fiji”.
