The Chief Justice Anthony Gates and three judges Justice Davendra Pathik, Justice Daniel Gounder and Justice Sosefa Inoke have today returned as judges after being appointed by the President.
President Ratu Josefa Iloilo appointed the four under the new Judicial Services Decree this morning at Government House.
Speaking this afternoon after the appointment of the first set of judges, Chief Justice Gates said judges must act as judges and the judiciary has to continue with its work.
Chief Justice Gates is confident that Fiji's judiciary will prosper and the right thing to do in this case is to ensure that the judiciary continues functioning.
He then questions what would happen if Fiji has no judges and also highlights that no one questioned the legality or validity of the court rulings after the 1987 coup.
On whether the right decision has been made, Chief Justice Gates said he has been through five coups in Fiji and he truly believes that the judiciary has to continue operating for the people of Fiji.
Meanwhile President Iloilo also appointed Mary Muir as Resident Magistrate today.
Muir is a former lawyer from the Western Division.
