The Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority will investigate allegations that some pharmacies are engaged in illegal practices following the findings of the Pharmacies Survey 2010.
Attorney General and Trade Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the survey revealed that some of the businesses are not following the law in terms of showing their TIN and VAT details on their receipts and this needs to be looked into by FIRCA.
The Survey carried out by the Consumer Council and the Health Ministry last year had a number of findings which revealed that 60% of pharmacies around the country were overcharging customers while some pharmacy employees were not dressed properly when serving customers.
These findings have also led to the review of the Price Control Order as well as a code of conduct for pharmacies.
Meanwhile, it was also revealed that the Poisons and Pharmacies Board will be scrutinizing the ownership of pharmacies as the proprietors are not allowed to own more than two outlets as some pharmacies are issuing receipts with names of another company.
