Some remand prisoners at the Naboro Maximum Remand Cell have gone on hunger strike as of yesterday afternoon.
Prisons spokesperson, Fred Elbourne said they are now investigating the incident.
The matter came to light during a court case earlier today where a remand prisoner made certain allegations against some prison officers and said they are on hunger strike.
This morning remand inmate, Maika Vakatalei appeared along with Penijamini Tuinaviti facing charges of aggravated assault.
Vakatalei then requested Suva Magistrate Thushara Rajasinghe that he wanted to make some comments in court.
He alleged that remand prisoners being kept in Naboro are being victimized by a group of prison officers and in protest they are on hunger strike.
He claimed that the Commissioner of Prisons is not aware of the alleged inhumane treatment.
Magistrate Rajasinghe told Vakatalei to write to the Commissioner of Prisons and inform him of these alleged acts as he is aware that such acts of abuse against prisoners is not condoned.
