Police call for change in road safety mindset following fatal accidents along Navua

Following the death of two men in Nabukavesi along Queen’s Highway last night and an eight-year-old in Vakabalea in August in separate accidents, and calls for more measures to prevent accidents, Police say people’s behaviour and mindset must change.

Police say both men who died last night were 26 years old, with one being a police officer who was on his day off and travelling home to Nabukavesi.

The second victim was a salesman who resided in Navua.

Based on initial information gathered, Police say it is alleged that the salesman overtook several vehicles along a double line before the collision occurred.

Police say this is subject to ongoing police investigations.

We are noticing a lot of speeding and overtaking at the bends despite oncoming traffic on our highways.

Vakabalea residents in Navua have also been calling on authorities to introduce more speed control measures along the Vakabalea main road, where residents say several accidents have already occurred.

While responding to fijivillage News, Police say they will continue to call for a change in mindset towards road safety among everyone, including drivers, pedestrians, parents and guardians, particularly when it comes to children, as road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

They say Police and Land Transport Authorities officers are doing their part, and are out conducting operations, bookings and awareness on our roads, everyday.

Police add the onus is on all road users.
