Ignorance is one of the reasons why people are involved in accidents.
These are the sentiments of the Land Transport Authority’s CEO, Naisa Tuinaceva following the revelation that twenty pedestrians lost their lives on our roads last year.
Tuinaceva said that when an accident happens, the driver is usually blamed but stats reveal that pedestrians are equally responsible in contributing to the high number deaths happening on the road.
Last year a total of 20 pedestrians lost their lives on the road while in 2009, a total of 134 pedestrians were injured on the roads with over 90 people hospitalized due to the extent of their injuries.
Tuinaceva said that it’s important for the pedestrians to play their part.
He added that people are aware of the basic road rules such as when to cross, where to cross from and what the different crossing lights indicate however despite knowing the road rules, people continue to break simple road rules.
This was one of the reasons why LTA was carrying out awareness programs and they reveal that 90% of the people near the Suva Bus stand needed to be told what to do, how to and when to cross.
Tuinaceva has called on members of the public to change their mindset when it comes to road safety and adults particularly need to set good examples for the younger generation.
