The Land Transport Authority is reminding drivers, vehicle owners and passengers about the importance of priority seating on public service vehicles to support persons with disabilities, the elderly, pregnant women and women travelling with infants.
LTA says every journey should be safe, comfortable and accessible for everyone, and a simple act of offering a seat or helping someone board a vehicle can make a meaningful difference.
Under the Land Transport (Public Service Vehicle) Regulations 2000, persons with disabilities must be given first priority when boarding a public service vehicle.
In omnibuses, the first two rows of seats must be reserved for persons with disabilities, while in minibuses and carriers, seats closest to the driver must be allocated to them.
LTA says drivers must not refuse to carry a person with a disability, while drivers and vehicle owners must take reasonable steps to assist persons with physical disabilities when boarding and disembarking.
Drivers are also required to ensure their vehicles are user-friendly for persons with physical disabilities.
LTA is urging people to respect designated priority seats and support those who need them most to help create a more inclusive, compassionate and accessible public transport system for every Fijian.
