Surfers will not face any major difficulties at surfing spots in the near future as the promulgation of the regulation of surfing Areas Decree 2010 has been approved by cabinet.

Following the cabinet decision, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the decree aims to liberalize access to any surfing area in Fiji and enhance Fiji's image as a premier surf travel destination.

He said the decree permits unrestricted access to and use of any surfing area by any person for the purpose of surfing or any other water sport without having to obtain any approval from any person and without the payment of any monies or compensation for the use of any such surfing area.

The decree also cancels any existing instrument of title, including any lease or license without payment of any compensation.

He also said that the decree prohibits exclusive use of any surfing area by any person.

However, in order to maintain the safety of persons at any surfing areas and to ensure environmental protection the decree contains a number of conditions which apply to any person accessing or using any surfing area.

The regulation will commence at a date determined by the Attorney General.
