MSAF reminds skippers to comply with Maritime safety rules

As Fiji enters a busy season of inter-island travel and commercial maritime activity the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is reminding all small boat owners, resort transport managers, and commercial vessel operators to comply with the Maritime Transport Act.

MSAF says every skipper must operate strictly within the limitations stated on their MSAF Certificate of Competency to help protect lives, passengers, and vessels operating in Fiji's waters.

The Authority says holders of a Boat Master Licence (BML) are authorised to operate vessels that are less than 15 metres in length and under 20 Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) only within sheltered waters, including rivers, harbours, bays, and protected inner reefs.

They say additional endorsements are required before BML holders can undertake open-ocean passages or outer-island voyages.

MSAF also says holders of a Restricted Master/Engineer Class 6 (RME-6) certificate are restricted to operating vessels under 15 metres and 20 GRT on designated inshore voyages.

These operators are responsible for both the safe navigation of the vessel and ensuring the engine is in proper working order, with machinery and bilge checks expected to be completed before every departure.

The Authority is reminding boat owners, employers, and vessel managers that they are responsible for ensuring crew members hold the appropriate qualifications for the size of the vessel they are operating and the intended voyage area before departure.

MSAF is encouraging maritime employers and resort operators to review their crew certifications and vessel survey documents, saying that safe seas depend on shared responsibility and strict compliance with maritime safety requirements.
