Aust/NZ hold talks on normalizing relations with Fiji
Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and her New Zealand counterpart Murray McCully have held talks on normalizing relations with Fiji.

Bishop who held talks with McCully in Auckland said their collective position is that they want to see a normalizing of relations as soon as possible.

According to Stuff.co, Bishop has long argued that instead of isolating Fiji further, Australia should seek to reengage with the government.

The report also said that they are very keen to identify the date of the proposed elections and once it is established there are many things that they can offer.

AAP understands that relaxing of Australia’s sanctions could be discussed if Fiji makes progress in coming months.

Bishop is also keen to see the two countries exchange senior envoys for the first time in four years and has confirmed she still wants Margaret Twomey to fill the position of Australia’s New High Commissioner to Fiji.

Twomey was appointed to the role last year however was not allowed to enter Fiji.
