The Raiwaqa Gas Crematorium Project in Navua is progressing, with installation and testing of a new gas-fired cremator now underway.
The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts says specialist technicians from India are currently in Fiji installing and testing the cremator and preparing it for commissioning.
The technicians are also training local Fijians to ensure they develop the practical knowledge and technical skills needed to operate and support the facility once the overseas team completes its work.
The Ministry says the project is about investing not only in infrastructure but also in local people by building technical capacity and reducing reliance on overseas expertise for the day-to-day operation of such facilities.
The technical team, together with Ministry officials, is also visiting other crematorium project sites across Fiji and meeting with cemetery committees.
The Ministry says the team is providing technical advice and guidance to assist committees with the planning and execution of their projects, including ensuring the required infrastructure is properly designed and prepared for the installation of gas-fired cremators.
Under the 2025/2026 financial year, the Ministry supplied the gas-fired cremator for Raiwaqa Cemetery, while the local committee constructed the building to house the equipment at its own cost through a Community Self Help Project.
The Ministry says the project highlights the importance of combining infrastructure development with community participation and investment in local skills.
