Vakabalea residents in Navua are calling on authorities to introduce more speed control measures, street lights and speed humps along the Vakabalea main road, where residents say several accidents have already occurred.
While speaking on behalf of the residents, Muni Ratnam says speeding continues to be a major concern and is putting lives at risk, including the death of 8-year-old Neori Drose, who was hit by a car on Tuesday, and the deaths of an elderly couple earlier this month.

Ratnam adds that some drivers signal and alert others about police officers conducting operations on the road.
He says although police presence has previously helped slow down drivers, more public support is needed to address dangerous driving.
The residents also calls for tougher penalties on speeding offences and urges drivers to slow down, take precautions, and reminds that reaching their destination safely is more important than speeding.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe says the Fiji Police Force will continue to call for greater acceptance of road safety by everyone, including drivers, pedestrians, and in the case of children, parents and guardians, as road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Questions have been sent to the Land Transport Authority and also the Fiji Roads Authority regarding the installation of street lights and speed humps.
