No mother should ever have to carry the burdens of postpartum depression alone, and maternal mental health is a critical public health priority that requires a whole-of-society approach.

That is the message from the Ministry of Health's Acting Deputy Secretary for Public Health Services, Dr Tevita Qoriniasi, who was speaking at the Postpartum Depression Workshop.

He says maternal mental health matters to mothers, children, families, and our nation, and behind the smiles and celebrations of a newborn, many mothers silently navigate one of the most demanding transitions in life.

Dr Qoriniasi says local data from the Voices of Mothers study highlights a poignant reality: one in three mothers in the CWM Hospital catchment area experience depressive symptoms, while one in eight show signs of probable depression.

He says financial hardship and a lack of daily support are among the strongest drivers.

He adds that postpartum depression is a health condition requiring deep empathy and care, not stigma, and seeking help is an undeniable sign of strength and courage.

Dr Qoriniasi says family members, partners, and community leaders must collaborate to build environments where mothers feel protected and valued.

He says through its Maternal and Child Health Policy, the Ministry of Health is actively strengthening healthcare models to ensure early identification and supportive care.

He is reminding every mother in Fiji that they are seen, valued and supported, and do not have to walk this journey alone.
