It no longer matters whether SODELPA is part of the coalition or not – Balawa

People's Alliance General Secretary Sila Balawa says it no longer matters whether SODELPA is part of the coalition or not, as they have the numbers within the coalition.

Responding to a question raised by a party member at the party's General Assembly about the Coalition Agreement between the People's Alliance, SODELPA and the NFP, and what happens when disagreements arise between coalition partners, Balawa says an inter-party policy committee was established when the coalition was formed.

He says the committee's role is to hear concerns when a coalition partner disagrees on a matter.

He says the committee will then call the party leaders to discuss the matter and resolve it internally.

However, Balawa stressed that it was different when dealing with coalition partner SODELPA, who sometimes take their concern to the media before taking it to the committee.

He claims SODELPA makes a lot of demands, and when these are not met, the party uses the possibility of joining the FijiFirst Party and causing the coalition government to fall as an excuse.

He says these discussions continued for a long time and only eased when the FijiFirst Party was disbanded.

Balawa says everything that was promised to SODELPA has been given.

The party's General Secretary also highlighted that they had difficult discussions with SODELPA when the coalition agreement was formed because SODELPA kept moving the goalposts.

We have sent questions to SODELPA. They are yet to respond.
