Five children join Fiji Day effort to plant 1,000 mangrove seedlings
Five children joined representatives from two government ministries to plant 1,000 mangrove seedlings along the Nasese foreshore, contributing to an initiative during Fiji Day week aimed at protecting Fiji’s coastline for future generations. The mangrove planting was held at My Suva Park as part of the Fiji Day Week programme and involved the staff from the Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection.

Minister for Forestry and Fisheries Alitia Bainivalu says the initiative reflects this year’s Fiji Day theme, Inclusive Fiji for a Better Tomorrow.

Bainivalu says just as the strength of a mangrove does not come from one root but from many roots growing together and supporting each other, Fiji becomes stronger when its people work together.

She says this reflects the kind of Fiji the country should continue to build, where communities, provinces, institutions and individuals work together towards a stronger future.

Bainivalu says working together will benefit not only the current generation but future generations as well.

She says the Ministry’s monitoring team will continue checking the 1,000 mangrove seedlings to ensure they survive and grow strong enough to stand on their own.
