Women in rural, maritime and underserved communities in the Central and Western Divisions are expected to gain better access to digital skills and economic opportunities through a US$3.5 million digital capacity-building project supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
This is after the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection and KOICA signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), which aims to improve digital literacy, support women entrepreneurs and help women access markets, services and information through technology.
During the signing, Minister Sashi Kiran highlighted the project is not limited to social welfare beneficiaries and is aimed at strengthening the digital and economic participation of women across Fiji.
She says the project has been developed following feasibility studies and consultations with stakeholders to ensure the support provided meets the needs and realities of women in Fiji.
Under the partnership, KOICA will provide technical and financial support, including equipment and locally purchased vehicles that will be used solely for the project before being handed over to the Ministry.
The project will also involve collaboration between Government, development partners, the private sector and other stakeholders to help women become more economically resilient, connected and empowered.
The project supports the Fiji Women’s Economic Empowerment National Action Plan 2025–2030 and Fiji’s wider development priorities under the National Development Plan 2025–2029 and Fiji Vision 2050.
