Spain beat Argentina 1-0 to win FIFA World Cup after 16 years

Spain have won the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in 16 years, defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after a dramatic final that went into extra time in New Jersey.

The two teams were locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes, forcing the match into extra time.

Spain had two goals ruled out.

Argentina were later reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernández was sent off.

Spain eventually found the breakthrough through Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of extra time to secure their second FIFA World Cup title and their first in 16 years.

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón was awarded the Golden Glove, while Rodrigo Hernández Cascante was named Player of the Tournament after another outstanding campaign in midfield.

France captain Kylian Mbappé won the Golden Boot award after finishing as the tournament's top scorer.

The win also ended Argentina's reign as world champions after they claimed the title in Qatar in 2022.


More than 80,000 fans packed New York New Jersey Stadium for the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.

The winners will also take home about FJ$112 million in prize money with the runners-up will receive about FJ$75 million.

Meanwhile, global music stars Madonna, Shakira and Justin Bieber entertained fans during the halftime show.

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise made a special appearance and delivered a speech before kickoff.
