Fiji’s U-16 footballers will have their eyes on creating history when they face defending champions New Zealand in the final of the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship in Papue New Guinea tomorrow.
The Junior Bula Boys have reached the final for only the third time in the tournament’s history after defeating the Solomon Islands in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals.
The victory has also secured Fiji's qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2027.
Fiji last reached the final in 2024, where they were beaten 3-1 by New Zealand.
Fiji have impressed throughout the tournament and are yet to concede a goal, showing strong defensive organisation and determination on their way to the final.
Coach Sunil Kumar says he is proud of the character shown by his players in the closely contested semi-final.
Kumar says they have taken it one step at a time, and experiencing a competition like this for the first time has been great for the young players.
Standing in Fiji’s way are 11-time champions New Zealand, who are chasing a record-extending 12th OFC U-16 Men’s Championship title.
The Junior All Whites coach Martin Bullock says his side has had to work hard throughout the tournament, with teams making every match challenging.
He says his team’s depth has been a major advantage during the competition.
With both teams already qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2027, the focus now turns to one final challenge: lifting the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship trophy.
The OFC U-16 Men's Championship final between Fiji and New Zealand will be played at 9.30pm tomorrow at PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
