Sir Bobby Charlton says Wayne Rooney is “a true great for club and country" after the striker broke his Manchester United all‑time goalscoring record.
Rooney's injury‑time equaliser against Stoke this morning in the Premier League was his 250th for United, breaking Charlton's 44‑year‑old record.
79-year-old Charlton told the United website that he would be lying to say that he is not disappointed to have lost the record, however, he can honestly say that he is delighted for Wayne.
Charlton says Rooney deserves his place in the history books.
United and Stoke drew 1-all today.
In other games, Tottenham drew 2-all with Manchester City, Swansea beat Liverpool 3-2, West Brom beat Sunderland 2-nil while West Ham beat Middlesbrough 3-1.
