The Lions management believe they are better equipped in 2017 to cope with the Hurricanes threat in Sunday's Super Rugby semifinal in Johannesburg.
The Lions lost only twice last year, both times to the Hurricanes and the second time in the final at Wellington.
But the Lions, who have not faced a New Zealand team all season are unbeaten in eight games so far at home, although they were pushed close by the Sharks on Sunday.
Coach Johan Ackermann is aware of the threat the defending champions pose and says they will have to go and look at the space that they give them.
The Lions will host the Hurricanes at 12.30am Sunday in the Super Rugby semifinal. The Crusaders take on the Chiefs in the other semi at 7.35pm this Saturday.
