Flying Fijians Coach confident as Pacific Nations Cup approaches

FIJI Water Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne has expressed his enthusiasm and confidence ahead of the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup, despite a brief preparation period with only two Test matches in July.

While speaking to the media this afternoon from their camp at the Holiday Inn, Byrne emphasized that the squad is focused on building depth toward the 2027 Rugby World Cup, rather than it being an experimental lineup.

Byrne says the importance of providing opportunities for players is for them to prove themselves in the program.

He adds that managing player fitness has been a challenge with the tournament’s squad size limited to 30 players, and minor injuries, including an ankle strain and a tight groin, are being handled with caution to ensure players are ready for upcoming matches.

The coach also praised the presence of experienced 7s players such as Joji Nasova, who recently signed with the Drua and is transitioning into 15s rugby.

He says support from veteran players like Seta Tamanivalu is helping younger players adjust to the demands of the game at this level.

Addressing pressure going into the tournament, the coach says it is an internal motivation rather than external stress.

He adds that the team’s focus remains firmly on improving their performance through rigorous training and analysis, rather than aiming for specific score lines.

Fiji will look to harness this positive momentum as they compete in the Pacific Nations Cup, aiming to showcase their depth and readiness for future international challenges.

Fiji plays Tonga at 3pm next Saturday at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
