Former Fiji weightlifter, Eileen Cikamatana of Australia has won gold in the 2023 Pacific Games Women’s 81kg weightlifting event with Fiji’s Makare Tavanavanua settling for the bronze medal.

Team Fiji weightlifter Zion Tokona has set a new record in the 96kg men's division clean and jerk at the 2023 Pacific Games this morning.

The 16-year-old broke the previous Oceania Youth record of 147kg setting a new record of 150kg.

Tokona says he was not expecting the result as he dropped the weights on the second attempt but managed to get it in the 3rd attempt.

He says going into his third attempt, he was a bit worried but he trusted in God and that helped him through.

Tokona says it was not an easy journey for him in terms of training as he just started his weightlifting journey last year.

He says he went through alot of training camps this year and it is finally starting to pay off.

Meanwhile, Timothy Vakuruivalu will be making his lift in the 102 kg men's category this afternoon while Miriama Baba and Leyna-May Domonatani will be making their lifts in the women's 87 kg category later today.

The Fiji Women’s Table Tennis team of Sally Yee, Grace Yee and Carolyn Li settled for silver after losing 3-2 to Tahiti in the final.
