The Army Tug of War team is preparing for another intense Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl showdown after winning the title for 15 straight years, and they are confident they will reclaim victory this year.
Team manager Lieutenant Samuela Rajale says he is confident in both the team’s culture and their readiness for the challenge ahead against the Police.
In his first year managing the side, Rajale acknowledges the tough contest expected from the Police Force, a rivalry that has become one of the highlights of the annual Sukuna Bowl.
He explains that Tug of War has been part of the Sukuna Bowl since its early days and remains one of the oldest events still featured alongside the main rugby match.
Rajale adds that while Tug of War was once an Olympic sport and is still widely practiced in the northern hemisphere, it continues to hold strong cultural value within the long-standing military–police sporting rivalry.
A majority of this year’s Army team comes from the Navy, with Rajale explaining that naval personnel naturally adapt to the sport, due to their daily work with ropes aboard vessels.
He says the team also trains together with members of the Land Force, combining their strengths and learning from senior sailors and officers who bring years of experience.
However, Rajale emphasizes that physical strength alone does not define the team.
While most Sukuna Bowl sports will be held in Suva, the Tug of War competition is set for Labasa, where the Army squad will travel this week to finalise their preparations.
Rajale says the team is determined to give their best despite limited time together due to operational duties.
He adds that each year brings changes to the lineup, with experienced athletes retiring and new sailors stepping up.
The manager hints at fresh faces in this year’s squad but has kept details under wraps, encouraging fans to come and see for themselves.
Rajale extends a heartfelt invitation to supporters, especially those in Vanua Levu, to witness the excitement and tradition of the Sukuna Bowl Tug of War.
The Army Tug of War team will take on Police during halftime of the main rugby challenge on Friday at Subrail Park, Labasa.
