Semi Valemei's hat-trick was not enough to help the Vodafone Fiji Bati as they went down fighting 36-22 against defending champions Australia at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
The Bati were outscored six tries to four, with Valemei scoring three tries and Taane Milne adding another, while Brendon Wakeham kicked three conversions.
The Bati put up a strong performance in the first half, challenging the Kangaroos in both attack and defence.
However, their intensity dropped in the second half, allowing Australia to take control of the game and secure the win.
The Kangaroos led 12-10 at half-time.
Bati captain Apisai Koroisau says he is disappointed they did not get the win but is proud of the effort shown by the players.
The Bati must now win their next match against the Kiwis to keep their Rugby League World Cup hopes alive.
When asked about preparations for the clash against New Zealand, Koroisau says they will take the same approach as they did this week, knowing it will be another tough challenge.
He adds that they have a good young squad and everyone just wants to play footy.
The Bati will face the Kiwis at 4.30pm on Saturday at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast.
