Fiji first country to unfurl Indian flag for India’s 80th Independence Day
Fiji has become the first country to unfurl the Indian national flag as part of celebrations marking India’s 80th Independence Day this year.

The historic moment took place at India House in Suva this morning, as the Indian High Commission launched the Suryapath Tiranga campaign, a global flag relay that follows the path of the rising sun from east to west.

Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta says Suva was chosen as the starting point, making Fiji the first among Indian missions around the world to hoist the national flag for the campaign.

Mehta says the campaign will now continue across 54 other countries as it moves westward, carrying the spirit of India’s Independence Day celebrations around the world.

He says the 80th Independence Day is a particularly special occasion for Indians, evoking a deep sense of pride and connection to the motherland.

Mehta says the occasion is also a chance to celebrate the strong and enduring partnership between India and Fiji.

The High Commissioner says the relationship between the two countries dates back 147 years to the arrival of the first Girmitiyas in Fiji.

He says people of Indian origin continue to make a significant contribution to Fiji’s development and social fabric.

Mehta says they are a real human living bridge connecting India and Fiji, and has encouraged them to continue contributing to both countries through their personal and professional lives.

Meanwhile, people turned out in large numbers at India House to mark the occasion, with the celebrations filled with colour, music and cultural pride.

The gathering was further brought to life through vibrant traditional performances, showcasing India’s rich cultural heritage and adding a festive atmosphere to the historic celebration.
