The Fiji Bati will have a new captain at the Rugby League World Cup following the absence of former skipper Tui Kamikamica and deputy captain Viliame Kikau.

Head coach Mick Potter, who guided the Bati to the semi-finals at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, says the captain will be named as the team begins preparations at the Uprising Resort in Deuba.

With both Kamikamica and Kikau unavailable, veteran Wests Tigers captain and three-time premiership winner Apisai Koroisau is among the likely candidates to lead the side.

Potter is also expected to select a leadership group, with the focus on ensuring the squad works together to produce results.

He says the expectation is for every player to give their best individually and collectively.

The Bati have reached the Rugby League World Cup semi-finals in 2008, 2013 and 2017, losing to Australia on each occasion.

The Rugby League World Cup will kick off next Thursday with Australia facing New Zealand at 9.05pm.

The Bati's first match will be against Cook Islands at 5.05pm next Sunday at the McDonald Jones Stadium in New Castle, they will then take on Australia at 9.05pm on the 25th, before facing New Zealand at 4.30pm on the 31st of this month.
