Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu is standing by a traffic officer for issuing a Traffic Infringement Notice to Opposition Member of Parliament Jone Usamate for illegal parking in the parliament precinct, while Usamate has labelled the actions an overreach on social media.
Tudravu says the officer had identified a traffic infringement and acted accordingly, stressing the officer was simply carrying out his duties.
He says Usamate, like any other citizen, has the right to challenge the officer’s decision in a court of law if he wishes to do so.
In a social media post, Usamate questioned the authority of police to issue the ticket within Parliament precinct and called on the Minister responsible for policing and the Commissioner of Police to clarify the matter.
The Commissioner is also urging anyone with complaints about the conduct of police officers to follow the proper reporting channels.
