The Land Transport Authority has cancelled 159 driving licences and suspended another 245 since January this year, as it warns drivers against dangerous overtaking, speeding and ignoring road markings following a fatal head-on collision along the Queens Highway that claimed the lives of two 26-year-old men.
LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer Makitalena Drova has expressed her condolences to the families of the two men.
Drova says one reckless decision behind the wheel can claim the lives of innocent road users.
She says double lines are not suggestions, as they are there to prevent dangerous overtaking and protect road users.
She says drivers who ignore these markings put themselves and innocent people at risk.
Drova is also warning against speeding, saying excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.
She says the Authority will not hesitate to take action against drivers who fail to comply with traffic rules.
The CEO says from January this year to date, the LTA has also issued 2,325 first warnings, 669 second warnings and 393 final warnings, while 115 drivers have received counselling.
She says these figures show that enforcement remains a priority, and the Authority will continue to hold drivers accountable for disregarding road safety requirements.
She is urging all road users to take traffic rules and road safety advisories seriously.
The Authority says it will continue to strengthen joint enforcement operations and road safety awareness programmes in communities, schools, public spaces and corporate offices, as well as through its Learner Driver Course and Defensive Driving Course.
