As the search continues for the 6 people who were travelling in a fibre glass boat between Namuka and Fulaga in the Lau Group, mariners in maritme areas across Fiji are being urged to strictly follow active weather warnings.
According to reports received by MSAF, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Fiji was notified yesterday that a half-cabin fibre glass boat powered by a 40-horsepower outboard engine had failed to arrive at its destination.
The vessel reportedly departed Namuka Island at around 10am yesterday bound for Fulaga Island.
Three fibre glass boats left Namuka that morning while two arrived safely in Fulaga, the third remains overdue with six people on board.
Following the report, JRCC Fiji, operating from the Vuvale Maritime Essential Services Centre (MESC), immediately activated search and rescue operations.
Navy Search and Rescue (SAR) mission coordinators have been working through the night, coordinating with government agencies, nearby vessels, and community contacts across the area.
Plans are underway to deploy both sea and air search assets today to widen the search effort.
Authorities are concerned that the missing vessel may not have been carrying essential life-saving equipment.
They say search operations are also being made more difficult by deteriorating weather conditions, including strong winds and rough to very rough seas.
They say despite these challenges, every effort remains focused on locating the vessel and bringing its occupants to safety.
MSAF is asking all mariners travelling between Namuka, Fulaga, and surrounding waters to keep a vigilant lookout for a white half-cabin fibreglass boat powered by a 40-horsepower outboard engine and its six occupants.
Anyone who sights the vessel or has information that could assist the search is urged to contact JRCC Fiji immediately on the toll-free number 1539 or report it to the nearest Police Station.
MSAF also reminds all mariners to take the nationwide Strong Wind Warning, issued on Thursday, 6 August 2026, seriously. The warning advises of southeasterly winds of 20 to 30 knots and rough to very rough sea conditions across affected areas.
In light of this incident, MSAF is reminding vessel owners and small-boat operators of their responsibilities to ensure safe operations at sea.
