That is now expected to change with the opening of the new Wainunu Farmers Market by Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Tomasi Tunabuna.
The new market will allow farmers to sell their produce closer to home, reducing transport costs and creating more opportunities to increase their income.
Around 1,600 people live in the Wainunu district, where farmers have traditionally travelled long distances to reach major markets.
Speaking at the opening, Tunabuna praised the people of Wainunu for working together to make the project a reality.He says the market shows what can be achieved when communities and the Government work together to create opportunities for current and future generations.
The community contributed more than $40,000 towards the construction of the market.
The Ministry of Agriculture provided more than $93,000 through the Commercial Agricultural Development Programme for construction materials and a solar power system.
Tunabuna says the market will provide farmers with a safe and convenient place to sell their produce while creating opportunities for women, young people, entrepreneurs and local vendors.
He says the facility is expected to encourage greater agricultural production and strengthen the local economy.
Organising committee member Akuila Nacoke thanked the Government for supporting the project, saying the new market will make it easier for farmers to sell their produce, reduce transport costs and improve household incomes.
The Minister also reminded the community that the market's long-term success will depend on good management and community ownership.
During a talanoa session after the opening, farmers shared their future plans and raised concerns about agricultural production, market access and infrastructure.
Tunabuna assured them that the Government will continue working with farmers by providing technical advice, production support and agribusiness programmes to improve livelihoods and strengthen food security.
The Wainunu Farmers Market is expected to become a key trading hub for the district while supporting economic growth in the rural community.
