40 Ram Sami and Sons workers are on strike as they demand better working conditions, improved pay and recognition of their union as their representative.
Fiji Trades Union Congress National Secretary Felix Anthony says the workers are also demanding recognition of their union as their representative.
While speaking to fijivillage News, Anthony says the workers have raised concerns for about two and a half years, but no agreement has been reached with the employer.
He claims the employer does not provide proper equipment or adequate working conditions.
He says on many occasions, workers have to work while wet for the whole day, without any recourse to improve their workplace conditions.
He stresses it is a difficult situation for the workers.
Anthony says the employer must now enter into serious negotiations with the union to resolve the issues.
He is also calling on the Ministry of Employment to intervene and mediate between the workers, the union and the employer.
Anthony says the workers will remain on strike while they await action from the employer or the Ministry.
