Serious concerns continue to be raised on the welfare of elderly people as Nasinu Community Policing Coordinator, Pio Matai, highlighted that some youths are forcing elderly family members out of their homes which is often linked to drug related issues.
Speaking at the launch of an Age Friendly Environment Awareness programme, organised by the Nasinu Older Persons Association in partnership with the Ministry of Social Welfare and other stakeholders, Matai says drug abuse is contributing to cases where teenagers are forcing their parents or elderly family members out of their homes.
He is urging the public to think carefully, stressing that if these cases go to court, ownership will remain with the parents as the property is the result of their hard work.
He adds that children or relatives can only take over the home after the parents have passed away, and if it is legally transferred through a will.
Senior Welfare Officer Qorio Naitoqiniwa says there is also an increase in cases of abuse, with many involving family members.
Naitoqiniwa is urging the public to report any signs of abuse and to use available support services.
A member of the association, Margaret Benion, adds that the situation is worsening, revealing that some elderly individuals were recently relocated to Vanua Levu due to a lack of space and care facilities.
She says, as one of the most densely populated areas, they continue to face increasing social challenges, with police working alongside relevant agencies to address these issues.
They are reminding the public that older persons have played a vital role in society and now require care, protection, and community support.
They are continuing to work with the government and partners to ensure senior citizens receive the assistance they need.
Meanwhile, participants at the programme were also provided with free health screenings by Diabetes Fiji and guided through simple exercises to help maintain active and healthy lifestyles.
The programme continues today at the Muanikoso Community Hall from 10am to 1pm, and tomorrow at the Mauriti Time Temple Hall in Caubati.
