Year 13 English highest scorer aims to become the first doctor in her family

Fiji’s Year 13 English highest scorer, Ishita Charan, is now setting her sights on an even bigger goal — becoming the first doctor in her family.

The 19-year-old former Dilkusha Methodist High School student scored an outstanding 96 out of 100 in Year 13 English and has now enrolled to pursue an MBBS at Fiji National University.

Charan says growing up without any doctors in her family motivated her to break new ground and choose medicine as her career path.

Despite her academic success, she admits her journey was not always smooth sailing that after being a top student, she gradually slipped to becoming an average student and at one point even fell behind in her studies.

However, she did not give up.

She says the moment she found out she had scored the highest in Fiji was very special for her.

Her strong comeback saw her score 94 in Mathematics, 89 in Chemistry, and 86 each in Biology and Physics.

Charan says revising past-year papers was her main strategy, and she credits her faith for helping her through difficult times.

She says her parents have been extremely supportive throughout her education journey, along with her spiritual parents from the Influence Church Global Network, who constantly encouraged her.

She also expresses her gratitude to Church Reverend Sharyn Chand, who is the Principal of Dudley Intermediate, her school principal Satendra Singh, and her English teacher Mrs Naiveli for their guidance and support.

Charan adds that prayer and putting God first have been her greatest source of strength.
